The sixth star is back, and the meter now describes you

GTA 6's Six-Star Wanted System, Explained

The single most searched detail out of the Extended Look is that the wanted meter goes to six. It is worth saying immediately that this is not new: it is a return.

The more interesting change is underneath the stars, where a second row of icons now tells you what the police actually know about you. That turns a wanted level from a number into a description being assembled in real time, and it is the part that changes how a chase plays.

Six stars, and why it is a return

GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA 4 all topped out at six stars. GTA 5 dropped it to five in 2013, and GTA Online kept the five-star ceiling for over a decade afterwards, which is long enough that a large share of the audience has never played a Grand Theft Auto with six.

That is why the detail read as new when the footage appeared, and why it is worth correcting: the meter in the Extended Look has visible room above the old cap because Rockstar is restoring something it removed, not inventing something it never had.

The icons under the meter

Below the stars there is a second row of symbols, and this is the genuinely new mechanism. Each one represents a specific thing the police have on you: a face, an item of clothing, a vehicle, or a camera that recorded you.

The practical effect is that a wanted level stops being a single number that goes up and comes down. It becomes a description, assembled out of whatever witnesses and cameras managed to observe, and every icon on it is a separate problem with its own separate solution.

A star drawn as an outline rather than filled in means the police are looking for someone but do not have a confirmed description yet. That distinction is the whole system in miniature: they know a crime happened, and they do not know it was you.

A crime has to be witnessed

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, has said that the wanted system requires somebody to see the offence or an alarm to be triggered before it is reported at all.

That is a bigger change than the sixth star. In previous Grand Theft Auto games the police effectively knew what you had done the moment you did it, wherever you were. Here, an empty street is a different proposition from a crowded one, and disabling an alarm before a robbery is not a flourish but the difference between a job the police hear about and one they do not.

The area stays hot

Escaping does not end an investigation. The location of the crime remains an active police zone, with officers searching the surrounding area before the search is called off, and returning to that area while it is still being worked can push the wanted level straight back up.

This is the mechanic that some coverage has described as a separate notoriety system. It is not separate — it is the same wanted system with a memory of place attached to it — but the instinct behind the description is right. Where a chase happened now matters after the chase is over.

How you get rid of a description

Each icon is dealt with differently, which is the point of splitting them up.

A physical description is cleared by changing your hairstyle at a barber. Small accessories — a hat, a pair of glasses — are reportedly not enough on their own, which is a deliberate rejection of the old trick of ducking into a clothes shop for a hat.

Wearing a mask while committing the offence keeps your face off the cameras in the first place, so the icon never appears.

An identified getaway vehicle is dealt with by getting rid of the vehicle. Cars have usable trunks that hold weapons and a change of clothes, which is what makes a wardrobe change mid-escape a plan rather than a scramble. The Extended Look also shows Lucia burning the car she had been driving after shaking a pursuit.

Two protagonists, two problems

The police also register whether you were working as a pair, which turns having two protagonists into a wanted-system mechanic rather than only a narrative one.

Jason and Lucia can separate and force a search to divide its resources between them. One can be arrested while the other stays free.

What we still do not know

What the sixth star actually brings. In the older games it meant the military, and it would be reasonable to expect something similar, but nothing in the Extended Look shows the top of the meter in action.

The clearest evidence that Rockstar is holding it back on purpose comes from ElRubius, one of four creators shown the game at Rockstar North, who says he asked Rob Nelson directly what happens at six stars and did not get an answer.

Common questions

Does GTA 6 have 6 stars?
Yes. The wanted meter in GTA 6 goes up to six stars. GTA 5 and GTA Online capped at five from 2013 onwards, but six was the standard in GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA 4, so this is a restoration rather than a new maximum.
What happens at 6 stars in GTA 6?
Rockstar has not said. In earlier games the sixth star brought in the military, but nothing in the Extended Look shows what the top level triggers, and Rob Nelson declined to answer when a visiting creator asked him directly. Anyone stating it confidently is guessing.
How do the police identify you in GTA 6?
By specific pieces of evidence, shown as icons under the wanted meter: your face, your clothing, your vehicle, and whether a camera recorded you. Each one can be invalidated separately — changing your hairstyle at a barber clears a physical description, and abandoning an identified car makes the search less effective.
Why did GTA 5 only have 5 stars?
Rockstar reduced the maximum from six to five for GTA 5 in 2013 and never explained why. The five-star ceiling then carried through more than a decade of GTA Online, which is why a generation of players encountered six stars for the first time in the GTA 6 footage.
