One developer's playthrough, not a completion time
How Long Is GTA 6? The 80-Hour Figure, Explained
6 min read · Source: Rob Nelson in press previews, reported August 28, 2026 · Updated August 28, 2026

The number going around is eighty hours, and it is real. What is getting lost is the sentence it came in.
It is one developer's own playthrough, it includes optional content, and it is not a measured completion time. Those three qualifications are the difference between a useful figure and a misleading one, so this page keeps them attached to it.

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, gave the figure during the press and creator preview round. He said his most recent playthrough — which he dated to February — took him about eighty hours.
It reached the public through TGG, one of the four creators invited to Rockstar North, and through the interviews that went live once the Extended Look had aired.

What it counts, and what it does not
It covers the campaign plus optional objectives that carry narrative consequences. It is not the main story in isolation, and it is not a hundred-per-cent completion run either.
It is also one person playing, and that person works at the studio. A developer's route through a game he has spent years on is not a typical route: he knows where things are, and he is also more likely than a player to detour into things he wants to check.
None of that makes the number wrong. It makes it a data point about one playthrough rather than an estimate of yours.

How it compares to GTA 5
GTA 5's main story runs about thirty hours. Set against eighty, that is somewhere near two and a half to three times as long, not twice — and the comparison is not clean in either direction, because the eighty-hour figure includes optional content and the thirty-hour one does not.
The honest version is that GTA 6's campaign is substantially longer than GTA 5's and that nobody outside Rockstar can yet put a multiple on it.
Chapters, and what that does to pacing
Nelson has also confirmed the campaign is built in chapters, the way Red Dead Redemption 2 was, rather than the open mission list GTA 5 used.
That structure is part of why the number is large. Rockstar describes a campaign that encourages players to spend time discovering Leonida instead of being pushed at the next objective, with open-world encounters connecting into the campaign so that it is less obvious where side content stops and the main story starts.
There is also a decision layer running through it — choices ranging from apparently trivial to genuinely pivotal, some of which take a while to show their effects — which Rockstar frames as a reason to play the campaign more than once.

What has not been said
How many chapters there are. How long the main story runs on its own. Whether there is a completionist figure and what it looks like. Whether the decision layer produces genuinely different endings or variations along the way.
Rockstar has not published any of it, and there is no measured playtime for a game that does not come out until November 19, 2026.

Common questions
- How long is GTA 6's story?
- Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, says his most recent playthrough took him about eighty hours. That run covered the campaign plus optional objectives with narrative consequences, and it is one developer's own playing rather than a measured completion time. A player heading straight through the story will not spend eighty hours on it.
- Is GTA 6's story twice as long as GTA 5's?
- It is longer, but 'twice' understates it and misdescribes the comparison. GTA 5's main story runs around thirty hours, so eighty is closer to two and a half or three times that — except the eighty-hour figure includes optional content, and the thirty-hour figure does not.
- Does GTA 6 have chapters?
- Yes. Rob Nelson has confirmed the campaign progresses through a chapter-based structure, the way Red Dead Redemption 2 did, rather than the open mission list of GTA 5.
